CAMARA DE LOBOS

Câmara de Lobos by Mark Blezard.

Câmara de Lobos, Madeira, is a beautiful much-photographed village famed for being one of the preferred locations of Winston Churchill when painting. Mark Blezard says, "If you are staying in Funchal, it is accessible on foot via a beautiful walk along a promenade built literally on stilts in the sea. However, be aware that the walkway is often closed during stormy weather in the winter when the waves can wash over the path. Special gates were installed to stop locals and tourists alike. The path is best picked up from either the Lido or São Martinho , just a couple of miles to the west of the capital."

Câmara de Lobos is believed to be the original landing point for the Portuguese discoverer João Gonçalves Zarco, who is credited with the discovery of the island of Madeira.
