CHRISTMAS LIGHTS OF MADEIRA

Mark Blezard documents Christmas' on the island of Madeira.

Christmas is a magical time in Madeira and the most important season for both locals and tourists alike. The weather is temperate all-year-round, so the lights and fireworks displays on New Year are very accessible. Your smartphone will record excellent images or if you want to work a little harder, bring your SLR and a tripod for even more spectacular results.

Here's a tip for viewing the Christmas lights of Madeira. The weeks of 24th December to just after 1st Jan are busy, and the most expensive on the island. However, the Christmas lights start going up late November and by very early December most of Funchal is complete. The first three weeks of December are typically quiet, lower cost, and with 90% of lights up and sparkling. Enjoy without the crowds or added cost!
